Our own tour

Medellín City of Contrasts: from downtown to La Sierra

How a city marked by decades of armed conflict became a benchmark of urban transformation, told by the people who research it. We walk the historic center, ride up the mountain on the transport that changed the city and reach a neighborhood that went from war to coffee.

  1. Parque BerríoWhere the town was founded in 1675 and the city began.
  2. La Candelaria, Junín and the ColtejerGold, the textile industry and a city built on its own ruins.
  3. Palace of Culture and Plaza BoteroThe 23 sculptures and the memory of Antioquia.
  4. Ayacucho Tram and MetrocableThe ride up the hillside shows the contrast through the window.
  5. La Sierra neighborhoodFrom the urban war of the 2000s to coffee and community work.
  6. Placita de FlórezColombia’s first covered market hall.

About us

Colombia told by Colombians who study it

Pitahaya Travel grew out of a collective of historians who have spent years telling Medellín’s story on foot. We believe the city can’t be understood by retelling the story of a single man: we tell it through the people who walk it and research it, with their struggles, persistence and transformations.

  • Historical rigor. Every tour is built on research; our guides have academic training.
  • Memory with respect. We tell the hard years with context and with the names of those who lived them.
  • Small groups. We treat you as a person, not a number.

Who are the guides?

City of Contrasts is guided by historians and journalists from the University of Antioquia who research the city. That’s why the tour is a conversation: you can ask anything you want.

How is it different from a free walking tour in Medellín?

Same team, same rigor, but with a reserved, prepaid spot: small groups, a guaranteed departure on the date you choose and travel assistance insurance included, with no obligatory tip at the end.

Where does City of Contrasts start?

At the Parque Berrío Metro station, south exit, which opens right onto the square. On the private version with pickup, we collect you at your hotel.

Yes. City of Contrasts runs in English on Saturdays, and the private version with pickup has a bilingual guide. On the Guatapé tour you can request a bilingual guide when booking, and the private Guatapé and Viewpoints by Night tours offer English- or Portuguese-speaking guides.

How do I pay?

When you book, you choose how to pay: in Colombian pesos with Bold (credit or debit card, PSE, Nequi or Botón Bancolombia) or in US dollars with PayPal. The dollar price uses the day’s official exchange rate (TRM) plus 12% to cover PayPal’s fee and the currency conversion.
